Why Ripper?

Well we went and got a second rabbit, named Ripper. Why Ripper? Well, part of it has to do with her brother's name. (see Dhoffryn's page.) That's right, another obscure "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" reference. Also, I hate rabbits with cute little names ("Lumpy" was right out), she loves to 'rip' around the living room, and finally she has ripped up more newspaper up in the few short weeks that we've had here.

A different rabbit?

This little girl (although I am not sure how long she will stay little) is called a Dutch Lop — the breed with the floppy ears. We picked her up at a local pet store when she was just 3 months old. Already she's about the size of D'Hoffryn, and if rabbit feet are like puppy feet, she is huge.

Ripper is getting slowly introduced to her older bother. Right now the two seem to barely acknowledge each other. According to experts, the best way to bring a new rabbit into a house with an existing rabbit is to get separate cages and place them near each other. Let the alpha bunny loose on his normal schedule but leave the new bunny in his cage. Then slowly allow the two to spend time together outside of their cages in a confined space. (We bought a bunny play pen for this.) The confined space part is so if they start a big brawl you can separate them. You then slowly increase the time they spend in the common area until they seem to accept each other's presence.

We have already started to see some signs of the two getting along. (much butt sniffing, with not too much fighting)

Time for some revisionist history. Turns out Ripper is infact a girl bunny. Sorry about that. When the vet went to look for certain parts, well she couldn't find them. This does explain the fighting (it turns out girl bunnies can be more agressive. It also explains the nests that she had just started building. Well we still love our bunny, D'hoffryn has actually started getting really protective and started trying to groom her through her cage.
