D'Hoffryn the Refrigerator Slayer

Why D'Hoffryn?

We are always asked where the name D'Hoffryn came from, and we usually give the short answer "It's a character from a TV show." To be more specific, it's a "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" reference. There is a female character named Anya who is terrified of rabbits, so I thought it would be cute to name the rabbit Anya. However, the little guy that we picked up was, well, a guy. We decided we needed a masculine name for the rabbit, and chose D'Hoffryn, the name of Anya's boss.

Why a rabbit?

We chose to get a rabbit because Crash is deathly allergic to cats and I need something fuzzy running around the house. I had hampsters the first few years we were married, but, they only live a few years and don't interact with humans a whole lot. When I heard that rabbits live longer (up to 10 years) and can be litter-trained, I became curious.

It turns out rabbits are great house pets. In the UK, house rabbits are quite common.

D'Hoffryn is a house-rabbit. He doesn't live in a cramped cage out in the yard - he has a two-story 'house' in our kitchen. The floor of his house is 24" x 48". The second floor is dark and covered in his favorite blankets.

I admit, we lock him in his house while we're at work. We do this because the "people" house is not entirely bunny-safe, and we want to be able to supervise him. (When I wasn't working I let him out all day, and I noticed that he mostly slept until evening anyway.) We've given him everything we can think of to entertain him while we're at work.

His favorite toys are the long wooden chew toys with bells at the bottom that we hang from the screens on the doors. He grabs them in his teeth and shakes the shit out of them in the morning - if we're late getting up, the ringing bell and rattling cage doors get louder and louder until we come out and give him some lettuce.
